ATMA ALAM Langkawi's original Art Village in Padang Mat Sirat was made possible by a young couple set out to realize a long-time dream. Aza Osman, an oil painter and Roshadah Yusof, a batik artist, have created a wonderful heaven of art and culture, showcasing the creative energy of a generation.

AIR HANGAT VILLAGE.Air Hangat literally means Hot Springs. The name is associated with an ancient legend of two feuding families who threw jugs, pots and pans at each other. One of the jugs, filled with boiling water, fell on the ground and immediately a hot spring gushed out of the spot where the village now stands.

THE TEMURUN WATERFALLS are conveniently located in the Mat Cincang Nature Park of Datai, offering ‘hot’ visitors refreshing mountain water to cool off. The waters cascade down a 30-meter (98 feet) drop, forming a natural pool below to swim in. These spectacular waterfalls are well worth a visit.

KUAH TOWN Undoubtedly the busiest place on the island, its name means ‘gravy’. If you follow the story behind Gunung Raya and Mat Cincang Mountain, Kuah arose because of a pot of spilt curry from the battle between two giants. Visitors flock to the town to purchase tax-free goods, and which is also a hub of commercial activity with luxury hotels, business complexes, banks, small emporiums and large shopping malls that litter the landscape.

PADANG MATSIRAT(FIELD OF BURN RICE) right next to the airport, was the site of a mass paddy-burning spree conducted by Langkawi’s inhabitants with the Siamese invasion in 1821. The purpose was to prevent the enemy from attaining an extra source of food. Today, visitors can still find burnt rice grains on the ground two hundred years after the incident.
